National Pet Week runs from May 4 to May 10, 2014. Pets bring delight into our life. Celebrate and appreciate them this week by committing to be the finest pet parents possible. Begin with the following five tips for taking better care of our animal family members.
1. Make time to exercise them. Pets, like humans, become out of shape when they do not exercise regularly. To help prevent numerous behavioral and medical issues, it is critical to engage in one hour of physical activity per day as many days of the week as possible. You can also divide the hour of action into 3-4 shorter bursts of enjoyment. Take a 15-minute walk around the block in the morning. When you arrive home from work, throw the ball into the backyard. Then, after supper, take the entire family on a 30-minute walk around the neighborhood. Give cats a stimulating environment with a variety of toys.
2. Make time for cerebral exercise. In general, 15 minutes of mental exercise is equivalent to an hour of physical activity for their mental health. The more mentally stimulating activities we provide for our dogs, the less likely they are to acquire undesired behaviors. Feed your pet’s meals with a special food distributing ball. Throw a handful of food out in the yard and let your pet sniff around for hidden goodies. Once or twice a day, spend 10 minutes on basic obedience (sit, remain, and down).
3. Ensure proper oral care at home. Pets have teeth, too. Try brushing your pet’s teeth once a day. Alternatively, offer an enzymatic chew to help reduce tartar buildup, tooth disease, and foul breath.
4. Take your pet to the vet once or twice every year. Pets age seven years for every one human year. Taking your pet to the vet for an annual exam and bloodwork is equivalent to visiting the doctor every seven years!
5. Have fun with your pet! Enjoy the time you spend with your pet. Before you know it, your puppy or kitten will be a senior citizen, and you’ll wonder where the time has gone. Create a solid bond with your pet. Do not forget that they adore you unconditionally.
